Strand Leads Huskers in NCAA Round 2

Kelli Ann Strand produced Nebraska’s best 18-hole score of the day with a 74 (+2) to lead the Husker women’s golf team in the second round of the NCAA Raleigh Regional at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Tuesday.

Strand, a freshman from Challis, Idaho, opened with a 38 (+2) on the back nine before balancing a pair of birdies with two bogeys to close her round on the front nine on the 6,324-yard layout at North Carolina State. The All-Big Ten golfer heads to Wednesday’s final round of the regional in a tie for 32nd at 148 (+4) with teammate Megan Whittaker.

Whittaker put together a round of 76 (+4) on Tuesday after leading the Big Red with an even-par 72 on Monday. The graduate student from Elkhorn, Neb., got off to a slow start but overcame a string of five straight bogeys on the back nine by rallying for three birdies on the front (No. 1, 4, 6) to post a 35 (-1). She heads to the final round at 148 (+4).

Lindsey Thiele (Wahoo, Neb.) and Michaela Vavrova (Bojnice, Slovakia) matched Whittaker’s 76 on Tuesday to complete Nebraska’s 302 (+14) team total in the second round. Thiele enters the final round in a tie for 45th at 152 (+8), while Vavrova is tied for 53rd at 154 (+10). Sophomore Miu Takahashi (Nasu-machi, Japan) enters Wednesday’s round in a tie for 49th at 153 (+9) after settling for a 79 (+7) on Tuesday.

“We had a rough start today,” Nebraska Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland said. “We battled and did our best. We ended the day strong again, and we are still in position to move up tomorrow.”

The Huskers, who sit in a tie for 10th at 598 in the 12-team regional field, are just two strokes behind Campbell (596). The only teams to complete the first 36 holes with totals better than par are the hosts from North Carolina State, who head to the final round at 571 (-5), and No. 11 Arizona State at 572 (-4), which is just one shot back of the Wolfpack. No. 2 Wake Forest produced Tuesday’s best round with a 285 (-3) to vault four spots up the team leaderboard from a tie for seventh into sole possession of third place at 577 (+1).

No. 26 Arizona (578) and No. 50 Purdue (578) sit in a tenuous tie for fourth (+2) just one shot ahead of No. 14 Florida State (579) and two shots in front of No. 38 TCU (580). The top five teams from each of the six NCAA Regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club (May 19-24) in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Wednesday’s final round of the NCAA Raleigh Regional begins with tee times of No. 1 and 10 at 7 a.m. (CT). Live scoring is provided by GolfStat.com.
