Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander on Tuesday thanked everyone for their sympathies in the wake of his father’s death in an auto accident the week of the Minnesota game.

Gene Chinander was 69 years old when the pickup he was driving failed to stop at an intersection and struck a parked semi trailer. Gene Chinander was a longtime high school coach in Iowa.

Erik Chinander coached Nebraska’s defense just two days later in the Huskers’ loss at Minnesota.

The younger Chinander on Tuesday talked of the influence his father had on him, and said his dad would have wanted him to coach and be there for his players.

“Right now, we have jobs to do,” Erik Chinander said. “And he’d want me to do my job.”

Chinander said his family is doing as good as can be expected while moving past the tragedy.

“What did I learn from him?” Chinander said of his father. “I learned everything.”

George Karlaftis, the Purdue defensive end, is “every bit as good as the guy at Michigan,” Nebraska offensive coordinator Matt Lubick said. Lubick was comparing the Boilermakers’ star to Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, a projected first round NFL Draft pick who has 5.5 sacks this season and finished with six tackles against Nebraska.
