Nebraska’s Denim Dawson enters transfer portal

Luke Mullin and Amie Just have the latest Life in the Red Podcast episode, which centers Big Ten Tournament hoops and football.

Nebraska basketball guard Denim Dawson, who started eight games this season as a defensive stopper, will be headed to the transfer portal, according to multiple sources.

The 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman from the Los Angeles area averaged 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds this season. His playing time peaked in January with the starts as NU tried to navigate the injury of Juwan Gary. Once another defender, Emmanuel Bandoumel, got hurt, Dawson’s minutes diminished in favor of Keisei Tominaga and Sam Hoiberg, who provided a similar defensive spark with more offensive punch.

Before the Big Ten Tournament, Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg applauded Dawson for his attitude in the face of diminishing minutes. Dawson is the second Husker to leave the program in as many days. Tuesday, Oleg Kojenets, the fourth-string center, is in the portal as well.

Talking generally this week about offseason roster turnover, Hoiberg said annual attrition is “common” in college basketball. NU intends to be aggressive, he said, in filling roster spots at center, point guard and shooting guard.
