Huskers Reach Final Stop on Tour

Huskers Reach Final Stop on Tour
Huskers Today
August 12, 2019

The Huskers’ final location was well worth the five-hour motor coach ride from Florence.

As the Huskers’ travel party got their first look of picturesque Lake Como late Saturday, cameras and phones came to life as the Huskers wanted to take in the scene.

Some of the players were awestruck with the majestic view from the highway.

“I don’t know if there words to describe it,” Bret Porter said. “It’s like the most beautiful place I’ve ever see. When we came around that turn on the highway that first time and you saw that down there, I thought I was gonna cry.”

The Huskers spent Saturday and Sunday exploring Como and the villages around the lake. Saturday night was highlighted by a traditional Italian meal before the team spent much of Sunday on a tour of Lake Como.

The morning tour highlighted many of the Lake Como villas used in movies including Villa del Balbianello from Star Wars: Episode 2 and Casino Royale, as well as other historic villas and hotels on the 60-minute tour.

From there, the tour stopped in Bellagio, which is the most well-known city on Lake Como. The area is famous for its shops, restaurants and scenic spots along the lakefront.

Following the boat ride, a few of the players, coaches and staff took the Funicular, a train that takes people from Como to the small village of Brunate, which is located above Como. With a 55% grade, think of a rollercoaster going to the top of the hill before getting off to enjoy one of the best vantage points on the lake.

The group continued to the Volta Lighthouse, where they climbed 142 steps to the top and enjoyed an amazing view of the area and the Swiss Alps in the distance.

“That whole thing was probably the most beautiful sight I’ve ever seen,” Jace Piatkowski said. “Going up to the top of the lighthouse, you could literally see for miles. You could see a ton of different cities and the experience is something I will never forget.”

The day concluded with a team meal which provided a panoramic view of Lake Como.

The Huskers will tour Lugano, Switzerland, on Monday before taking on the Italian Select team tonight at 11 am (central).
