Huskers Earn Postgraduate Scholarships – University of Nebraska

Nebraska rifle athlete Emily Cheramie and track and field/cross country runner Mark Freyhof were selected to receive a Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship, the conference announced.

Cheramie is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and 2020 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. She was a recipient of the 2021 Nebraska Heart & Soul Award, received the 2020 Sam Foltz 27 Hero Leadership Award and has been on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll five times. A native of Georgetown, Ky., Cheramie has been a standout performer for the Husker rifle team over the last five years as she holds the school record for her air rifle score and was a 2021 NCAA Finalist.

Freyhof earned his bachelor’s degree as an agricultural engineering major in May of 2020 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in agriculture and biological systems engineering. Freyhof, a native of Hamilton, Mich., was a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He has been named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll 10 times and is a four-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship team. He has made an impact on the Nebraska cross country and track and field teams finishing 103rd at the 2018 NCAA Championships and 46th at the 2020 Big Ten Championships.

“Both Emily and Mark exhibit impressive academic and athletic accomplishments, as well as admirable leadership qualities,” Dr. Scott Fuess Jr., University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty athletics representative, said. “They have excelled as role models for their teams, Nebraska Athletics, and the University. The Big Ten Conference will be proud to support their postgraduate studies.”

Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program. The $7,500 scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student’s postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
