Nebraska running back Jaquez Yant enters transfer portal

Well, hello, Nebraska has a new head football coach. Hit or miss? Amie Just and Luke Mullin break down the hire.

Nebraska running back Jaquez Yant and reserve kicker Charlie Weinrich entered the transfer portal Thursday to become the program’s latest offseason exits.

Yant — the 6-foot-2 235-pound rusher known for bruising runs and the occasional breakaway — was buried on the depth chart this season, carrying 20 times for 56 yards and two touchdowns in six games. Weinrich, a walk-on freshman, was NU’s No. 2 placekicker but didn’t see action.

The Huskers have now seen 11 scholarship players leave since Black Friday and 15 overall.

The Tallahassee, Florida, native Yant walked on as part of the 2020 class and earned a scholarship the following year, when he played in seven games — with a start against Iowa — and rolled up 294 yards on 47 totes.

Nebraska still has its top four rushers on the roster, though many have decisions to make. Anthony Grant could return for a sixth college season while backup Ajay Allen was recruited by staffers no longer in Lincoln. Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson remain with the team as well.

Big Red has also offered a scholarship to and is hosting Omaha Westside 2023 kicker Tristan Alvano this weekend.
