Nebraska adds first transfer of offseason in Florida long snapper

Nebraska made its first transfer addition of the offseason Sunday in a veteran long snapper out of Florida.

Marco Ortiz announced his commitment on social media, thanking coach Matt Rhule and special teams coordinator Ed Foley for the opportunity. He’ll be part of a long-snapper reset with the Huskers moving forward.

Ortiz — set to graduate next May — already has five college seasons under his belt but has two seasons of eligibility remaining because of the free pandemic year in 2020 and an injury campaign this fall. He played in all 13 games for the Gators in 2021 with no muffs.

Nebraska’s long snapper for punts last season, Brady Weas, is out of eligibility while its man for field goals and extra points, Cameron Pieper technically has one year remaining but participated in Senior Day ceremonies last month. Another junior snapper, Cade Mueller, had already been coming off an ACL injury and was already a college grad — his Twitter bio lists himself as a “former” Husker.

The only other snapper on the roster from last season was three-year player Camden Witucki, who has yet to appear in a game. Former Nebraska special teams coach Bill Busch said last July the team was “grooming” Witucki as the snapper for 2023 and beyond.

Now Ortiz joins the mix. The Richmond, Virginia, native was rated the No. 6 overall player at his position by Rubio Long Snapping out of high school. Ortiz went into the portal in late October but finished the regular season with Florida.
