LINCOLN — After he talked for 15 minutes to a horde of media, defensive coordinator Mark Banker had just two reporters beside him as he recalled the last two months of life inside the Husker football program.

“Don’t get me going,” Banker said when I asked him to consider the journey NU coaches and players had taken since July 23, when punter Sam Foltz died in a car crash, until now, when the team stands 5-0 headed into a much-needed bye week.

Banker paused for a minute to collect his emotions.

“Sam lives in all these guys,” Banker said. He stopped again. “I mean, I truly believe that. Not a day goes by. It’s not fake. That kid meant so much.”
