Martin Wins US Amateur Championship, Joins 2023 Team USA



Las Vegas, Nev. – After five days of intense qualifying rounds, Freshman Jillian Martin tops Mary Orf (199-170) in the 2023 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Team USA Trials stepladder finals to claim the US Amateur Championship and a spot on Team USA.  

Throughout the week Martin was a dominant force in the trials by starting the first day of qualifying rounds in the overall first place seed with a total pinfall of 1,350 and an average of 225. Martin continued to fight as she bounced around placements each day with high averages and scratch points. Day two of qualifying Martin received seventh with a total pinfall of 1,236 followed by day three in 13th (1,283), day four in 17th (1,251) and day five in 16th (1,269). Martin completed all five rounds of qualifying with a total pinfall of 6,389 in third place.  

After receiving a top three placement, Martin then qualified for the amateur stepladder finals. Martin then surpassed Mary Orf (199-170) to lock up the title of US Amateur Champion and received a spot on the 2023 Team USA.   

Three current Husker Bowlers finished the overall trials in the top 50 placements with Crystal Elliott finishing the trials in 24th with a total pinfall of 6113. Kayla Verstraete took 34th (5,895), and Kendyl Hofmeister in 50th (5,798). Anna Callan finished in 62nd (5,783) and Marissa Cosentini in 141st (5,030). 

Current Husker Assistant Coach Julia Bond finalized the overall trials in 18th with a total pinfall of 6,077. Former assistant coach and Husker great Shannon Pluhowsky finished in 45th with a total pinfall of 5,827.   

Up next, the Huskers return to the lanes in a less than 24 hour turnaround for the 2023 Stormin’ Blue & White Vegas Classic, January 8-10
