The Nebraska swimming and diving team is set to travel to Piscataway, N.J., to take on Rutgers for the final dual of the season, Jan. 27-28. The action begins at 5 p.m. (CT) on Friday and resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT).
The Huskers (6-2, Big Ten 2-1) are coming off a 168-132 win over Illinois, powered by seven Huskers capturing event titles. Gena Jorgenson highlighted the dual, breaking the Devaney Center Natatorium record to win the 1,000 freestyle in 9:53.58.
Rutgers is 3-2 on the year, with a victory over Purdue in its only other Big Ten dual. NU met the Scarlet Knights earlier this season at the Hawkeye Invitational, where Nebraska finished first and Rutgers placed second among the field.
Nebraska evened the series 2-2 after claiming the dual victory over Rutgers last season with a final score of 210-143. Madesyn Ronquillio (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke) and Berkeley Livingston (200 IM, 400 IM) each notched a pair of individual titles in the dual to propel the Huskers to their final dual win of the season.
Jorgenson, a freshman from Aberdeen, S.D., owns eight titles on the season, including four in the 1,000 freestyle. At the Hawkeye Invitational, Jorgenson cut 20 seconds off her previous best mile time to finish second in 16:34.48. Jorgenson added a pair of third-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (4:48.19) and the 400 IM (4:18.31) in career-best times in Iowa City.
Shannon Stott has contributed nine victories of her own, with five in the 200 butterfly and three in the 500 freestyle. She has clocked NCAA B Standard Cuts in both events and won the 200 butterfly at the Hawkeye Invite with a 1:58.15. Additionally, Stott finished second in the 500 freestyle (4:44.97) and the 200 freestyle (1:47.72).
Madesyn Ronquillio has led the Big Red in the backstroke events, with eight 100 backstroke and six 200 backstroke finishes within the top-three.
Sarah Barton has been a versatile contributor for the Huskers, clocking career-best times in both individual medley events at the Hawkeye Invite to finish second in the 200 IM and fourth in the 400 IM. In the 200 butterfly, Barton has tallied six top-three finishes.
Berkeley Livingston has finished in the top five on eight occasions in the individual medley events. The senior from Lincoln also has a pair of 1,000 freestyle wins on the season.
Maia Hall and JoJo Randby have teamed up to make a major impact in the breaststroke events. At the Hawkeye Invite, Randby swam an NCAA B Standard Cut in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:01.20 and went on to finish as runner-up. Randby has placed within the top-two all seven times she has swam the 100 breaststroke this season.
Hall cruised to a 200 breaststroke title at the Hawkeye Invite with a career-best 2:10.76 to bring her to five individual wins on the season.
In the sprints, Lexi Kucera and Giulia Marchi have led the Big Red in relays and individual events. At the Hawkeye Invite, Kucera gathered a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly and a trio of third-place finishes in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and the 200 butterfly. Marchi has been a member of six winning relays, including swimming the anchor leg of the victorious 400 freestyle relay last weekend against Illinois.
In the distance freestyle events, Molly Rosenthal has notched nine top-three finishes, including third place in the 500 freestyle against Illinois.
Kelsey Clairmont is coming off a diving sweep in the Illinois dual, winning the one-meter with a career-best 281.70 and the three-meter with a 297.08. In December, Clairmont claimed the platform title at the Hawkeye Invite, during her first time competing in the platform at the collegiate level.
Reagan Hinze has contributed 11 top-five finishes this season, including one-meter wins against Iowa State and Omaha.
Rutgers’ top returning scorers from last season’s Big Ten Championships are Sofia Chichaikina, Alice Scarabelli and Savana Trueb. Scarabelli’s top finish was in the 200 freestyle, where she finished eighth, while Chichaikina made B-final appearances in the 200 butterfly and the 200 freestyle. Trueb is a dominant diver, finishing eighth in the three-meter finals at conference last year.
