Huskers Secure Top Five Seed For Final Day in Arkansas



Jonesboro, Ark. – The Nebraska bowling team went 2-3 on day two in Jonesboro, Ark., bringing its overall record to 6-4 and currently sitting in fifth at the 2023 Mid-Winter Invitational. After two days, NU has a total pinfall of 10,385 and an average of 207.7. 

The Big Red started the day off with a loss against No. 8 Maryville (1,094-1,014), but came back with a strong win against No. 9 Sam Houston (1,003-938). NU then suffered back-to-back heartbreaking losses to No. 12 Louisiana Tech (1,101-1,096) and No. 7 Youngstown St (1,029-1,026), where both matches were decided by five pins or less. The Huskers finished the day with a win against Grambling (1,062-668) to secure the fifth-place seed for tomorrow’s bracket play. 

Four Huskers currently sit in the top 25 individual standings after today’s five traditional matches. Redshirt junior Kayla Verstraete leads the Huskers in 10th with a total pinfall of 1,067. Freshman Jillian Martin follows closely behind Verstraete in 11th with a total pinfall of 1,082. Senior Kendyl Hofmeister tied for 16th with Megan George from Stephen F. Austin University with a pinfall of 1,069, and senior Crystal Elliott rounds out the group with 1,043 pins in 23rd.

The Huskers will resume competition tomorrow at 8:25 a.m. (CT) for bracket play. Each team will compete in three matches of best 4-of-7 baker games for final placements and awards. Given their fifth-place seed, the Huskers are the top of the second pod and will be eligible to compete for third place.
