It’s no surprise that Scott Frost has big plans for Adrian Martinez in his sophomore year and beyond.

On the Husker Sports Nightly radio program, the Nebraska head coach set the bar way off in the distance for his prized signal-caller.

“Adrian, from the minute I met him, I knew he was a special kid,” Frost said. “We had a decision to make coming out of spring ball and coming out of fall camp on who our guy was going to be at quarterback. Our staff could see who he was and had an idea of what he was going to be come and knew he had a chance to be really special.

“My hope is that when he leaves Nebraska, he’s thought of as one of the all-time greats at the position. In fact, I hope he’s thought of as the greatest to ever play at Nebraska at that position.”

Martinez, broke several NU freshman and school records and finished his first season with 3,200-plus yards of offense and 25 total touchdowns in 11 games and 3,200-plus yards of offense.

He’s generated some offseason buzz as early lists of Heisman Trophy contenders for 2019 circulate, and one recent oddsmaker, SuperBookUSA, pegged Martinez at 6-to-1 odds alongside Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts and Ohio State’s Justin Fields and trailing only Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa.

“Well to be honest with you that kind of ticks me off because I never had those kind of odds when I was in school,” Frost joked.
