Crooked Numbers in the Sixth Hand Nebraska Fourth Loss

More crooked numbers adorned the scoreboard late in the game Saturday in San Diego.

Neither team had much production on offense, with Nebraska (1-4, 0-0 Big Ten) only getting a player into scoring position once in the first five innings but a double-play ball immediately ended the threat. San Diego State (5-1, 0-0 Mountain West), meanwhile, also only had one player get into scoring position in that same time frame but couldn’t make anything happen.

The Huskers got the scoring started in the top of the sixth inning as Aaron Palensky knocked in Spencer Schwellenbach with a double down the left field line. Luke Roskam poked a single into left field, scoring Palensky and giving Nebraska a 2-0 lead through the top of the sixth.

Colby Gomes was close to a quality start, going 5.0 innings and leaving with no runs on the board against him. But Gomes hit the first batter he saw in the sixth inning and was replaced by Bo Blessie.

Blessie got a foul out on his first batter, but two walks and two wild pitches had the bases full. Two batters later and the game was tied as Trey Kissack came in to pitch. Kissack gave up a two-run single before getting a strikeout and ground out to end the inning.

The Huskers had a chance in the eighth inning with Schwellenbach in scoring position, but a strikeout ended that opportunity. Nebraska only had one hit over the final three innings as San Diego State took the 4-2 win.

Both teams had five hits for the game, with Nebraska leaving six runners on and committing zero errors. San Diego State left seven runners on and had one error.
