Clearing New Heights – University of Nebraska

As athletes, we sometimes fall into the trap of defining our self-worth based on our successes and failures.

Unfortunately, I learned this lesson the hard way.

Being a Nebraska native, it was the honor of my life to accept a scholarship to high jump at the University of Nebraska.

During my freshman season, I saw immediate success and was named an All-American. It was far from easy, but I’ve always given everything I had to this sport, so I assumed I’d experience this much success every year.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

In my sophomore season, I wasn’t hitting my marks like I had the year before. It was as if I peaked during my freshman year, and it was beyond frustrating.

I used to think if athletes regressed, they’re not working hard enough, or they lost their focus along the way.

As a fifth-year senior now, having experienced a series of highs and lows in my journey jumping for Nebraska, I’m far less naive.

I’ve come to realize you never know what someone is going through, and for me, personally, I had to dig deep and look at myself internally if I wanted to get back to clearing the heights I knew I was capable of.
