Ameer Abdullah said Thursday that he’s “a huge Scott Frost fan,” which made it tough for him to criticize Frost’s call for an onside kick in the third quarter of Nebraska’s game last week against Northwestern.
The former Husker running back, playing for the Las Vegas Raiders in his eighth NFL season, was hardly alone in questioning the Nebraska head coach’s decision.
“Regardless if we even recover that ball, it’s a horrible call,” Abdullah said in a tweet Saturday. “No way you can think you’re closing a game out in the 3rd quarter.”
The Huskers led by 11 points at the time, but Northwestern scored the game’s final 14 points for a 31-28 win.
During a Raiders press conference Thursday, Abdullah was asked about the kick.
“I wasn’t a fan of it, but I’m a huge Scott Frost fan so it was tough for me to speak against it,” he said. “But you know, no one play loses the game, but that one hurt. That one hurt. It definitely hurt.”
Earlier in Thursday’s session, Abdullah was asked about having the chance to play for college and pro teams with rich legacies such as the Huskers and the Raiders.
“I would say it starts with the fan base,” he said. “I mean, the fan base is going to travel no matter where you are, and they are going to support you for sure. They really live and die Raider football, just like they did in Nebraska.
“So right off the bat when I signed here, you get outpouring of the fans and everyone supporting you. People that you didn’t even realize were still rooting for you. This is my eighth year in the league, and I got people coming out the woodwork saying like, ‘Man, I’m a Husker fan and a Raider fan. This is doubling down. This is great.’

“So, I’m honored to play for an organization such as the Raiders that has such prestigious history. I actually was a Raiders fan and an Eagles fan growing up because my older brother loved Charles Woodson. So, full-circle moment for me, and my family gets to come to this first game, so it will be special.”
